  • Pedal wrench for leverage and pedal service
  • Chain whip for cassette removal
  • Chain splitter tool for precise chain fitting
  • Quick link pliers for fast repairs and maintenance
  • Professional-grade construction for workshop durability

When to Service Your Cassette

Deep Cleaning: Every 500-1000 miles or when shifting degrades
Cassette Replacement: When teeth become hooked/worn or after 2-3 chain replacements
Chain Replacement: Every 1500-2500 miles (road) or 1000-1500 miles (MTB)

Complete Cassette Removal & Installation

Step 1: Remove the Rear Wheel

  1. Shift chain to smallest rear cog
  2. Release brake caliper if needed
  3. Open quick release or remove thru-axle
  4. Lift chain off cassette and remove wheel

Step 2: Remove the Cassette

  1. Position Chain Whip: Wrap chain whip around one of the larger cogs, positioned to prevent clockwise rotation
  2. Insert Cassette Tool: Place cassette lockring tool into the lockring splines
  3. Break Lockring Loose: Hold chain whip firmly, turn lockring tool counter-clockwise with wrench
  4. Unthread Lockring: Once loose, spin lockring off by hand
  5. Remove Cassette: Slide cassette off freehub body (note the order of spacers)

Step 3: Clean Cassette & Freehub

  1. Separate cassette cogs if needed (note order and orientation)
  2. Soak cogs in degreaser for 15-20 minutes
  3. Scrub between cogs with brush to remove grime
  4. Clean freehub body with rag and degreaser
  5. Inspect freehub pawls and apply light grease if needed
  6. Rinse cassette thoroughly and dry completely

Step 4: Reinstall Cassette

  1. Align cassette splines with freehub body (one spline is wider)
  2. Slide cassette onto freehub, ensuring proper seating
  3. Replace any spacers in correct order
  4. Thread lockring on by hand until snug
  5. Use chain whip to hold cassette, tighten lockring to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs)
  6. Verify cassette is secure with no play

Chain Service During Cassette Maintenance

Chain Removal & Cleaning

  1. Remove Chain: Use quick link pliers to open quick link, or chain splitter to push out pin
  2. Deep Clean: Soak chain in degreaser, scrub thoroughly, rinse and dry
  3. Inspect for Wear: Check chain wear with gauge - replace if over 0.5% (road) or 0.75% (MTB)
  4. Check for Damage: Look for stiff links, twisted links, or damaged rollers

Chain Replacement & Sizing

  1. Size New Chain: Thread through derailleur, wrap around largest chainring and largest cog (bypass derailleur), add two links
  2. Cut to Length: Use chain splitter tool to remove excess links
  3. Install Quick Link: Connect chain ends with quick link, use quick link pliers to seat properly
  4. Lubricate: Apply chain lube to each roller, wipe excess
  5. Test Shifting: Run through all gears to verify smooth operation

Using the Chain Whip Effectively

The chain whip is essential for cassette work:

  • Cassette Removal: Wrap around larger cog, hold firmly while loosening lockring
  • Cassette Installation: Hold cassette while tightening lockring to proper torque
  • Proper Technique: Position for maximum leverage, keep steady pressure, avoid slipping

Maintenance Schedule

Task Frequency
Chain cleaning & lubrication Every 100-200 miles
Chain wear check Monthly
Cassette deep clean Every 500-1000 miles
Chain replacement 1500-2500 miles (road), 1000-1500 miles (MTB)
Cassette replacement After 2-3 chain replacements or when worn

Pro Tips for Drivetrain Longevity

  • Replace Chain Early: A worn chain will destroy your cassette - replace at 0.5% wear
  • Clean After Wet Rides: Moisture accelerates wear - clean and lube immediately
  • Rotate Multiple Chains: Using 2-3 chains in rotation extends cassette life significantly
  • Proper Torque: Always tighten cassette lockring to 40 Nm for secure installation
  • Inspect Freehub: Check freehub engagement and lubrication during cassette service

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Skipping Under Load: Worn chain or cassette - check chain wear and replace if needed
Poor Shifting: Dirty cassette or worn chain - clean thoroughly or replace
Cassette Wobble: Lockring not tight enough - retighten to proper torque
Freehub Not Engaging: Pawls stuck - remove cassette, clean and lube freehub
Chain Drop: Worn cassette teeth or incorrect chain length - inspect and replace
