How to Plug a Tubeless Tyre for a Fast Repair

A sharp hiss halfway through a club ride or deep into a trail does not have to mean fitting a tube or calling for a lift. Knowing how to plug a tubeless tyre turns many punctures into a quick, dependable roadside repair. With sealant still inside the tyre, a correctly fitted plug can get you rolling in minutes - often without even removing the wheel.

Tubeless plugs are designed for the punctures sealant cannot close on its own: typically a small but visible hole left by glass, flint, wire or a thorn. They are compact, light and far quicker to use than a tube in the right situation. The key is carrying a professional-grade repair kit, working methodically and knowing when a plug is not the safe answer.

What a tubeless plug does - and when to use one

A tubeless repair plug is a sticky strip or cord pushed into a puncture with a dedicated insertion tool. Part remains outside the tyre while the material inside fills the hole. Sealant then coats the plug and helps create an airtight seal as the wheel turns.

Use a plug when the tyre has a puncture through the tread and keeps losing air after sealant has had a chance to work. A hole around 2-5 mm is the usual territory for a standard plug, though the exact size a kit can handle depends on the plug material and tyre casing. Smaller holes may seal with fresh sealant alone; larger holes may need two plugs, a tyre boot and an inner tube, or a replacement tyre.

Do not rely on a plug for damage to the sidewall, a split casing, a blown bead or a tyre with torn fabric visible through the rubber. Sidewalls flex heavily and carry less protective material than the tread. A trailside patch may get you home at very low pressure, but it is not a reliable repair for normal riding. If the rim is damaged or the tyre will not stay seated, stop and assess the bike before continuing.

What to carry for a fast repair

A compact tubeless setup does not need to take over a jersey pocket. At minimum, carry a plug tool, several plugs and a way to reinflate. A CNC aluminium CO2 inflator with a threaded cartridge is fast and compact for roadside use, while a mini pump gives you unlimited air and avoids the risk of dumping a whole cartridge through a poorly seated valve.

A few extras make the system more capable. Include a valve-core tool, because a removable core can clog with dried sealant; a spare valve core; and a small quantity of compatible sealant for longer rides or dried-out tyres. Tyre levers and a lightweight TPU inner tube remain sensible backup for a puncture that a plug cannot contain. For mountain biking and gravel, where lower pressures can burp air from the bead, a pump is particularly useful after the initial repair.

Before heading out, check that your tyre contains enough liquid sealant. A plug works with the tyre casing, but sealant completes the job. There is little point carrying a precision repair kit if the tyre has been ridden dry for months.

How to plug a tubeless tyre at the roadside

1. Stop before the tyre goes completely flat

If you hear air escaping, avoid riding on until the rim contacts the ground. Rolling a flat tubeless tyre can unseat the bead, damage the rim and turn a simple puncture into a longer repair. Slow down, move somewhere safe and rotate the wheel until you find the source of the hiss or sealant spray.

Leave the object in place at first if a thorn, shard of glass or small wire is still embedded. Its position marks the hole and helps limit immediate air loss. Once you are ready with the repair kit, pull it out carefully. Check for more than one sharp object - a tyre can collect a surprising amount of debris in one wet lane or gravel section.

2. Put the puncture at the bottom

Hold the wheel so the puncture sits at roughly the six o'clock position. This lets the sealant pool around the hole before and after the plug goes in. Give the wheel a gentle shake or spin if needed, then wait a few seconds. Sometimes sealant will seal the puncture without further work.

If air keeps escaping or the sealant forms bubbles, use the plug. Wipe away only enough excess sealant to see the hole clearly. There is no need to clean the tyre perfectly; some sealant on the plug can assist the seal.

3. Load the plug into the insertion tool

Thread a single repair strip through the eye or fork of your insertion tool so equal lengths sit on both sides. The plug should be centred and held firmly, but not so tightly that the tool cannot release it. Sticky bacon-strip plugs are widely used because they conform well to irregular punctures. Rope-style plugs can be effective too, provided they suit your kit.

If the hole is unusually tight, use the reaming tool supplied with some kits to open and prepare it. Do this sparingly. Reaming can make insertion easier, but enlarging a puncture more than necessary makes sealing harder. Many modern plug tools are sharp enough to enter a clean puncture without a separate reamer.

4. Insert the plug with controlled pressure

Push the loaded tool straight into the puncture until roughly two-thirds of the plug is inside the tyre. You want two short tails remaining outside, usually around 5-10 mm. Avoid forcing the tool all the way through the casing; that can pull the plug into the tyre rather than leaving material to seal the outer opening.

Withdraw the insertion tool in one smooth movement. The tool should release the plug while leaving it in place. A brief hiss is normal, but it should quickly reduce as the plug beds in and sealant reaches it. If the plug pulls out with the tool, reload another strip and try again with a steadier withdrawal.

For a larger tread puncture, two plugs can work better than one. Place them side by side rather than trying to ram both into the same tiny opening. It is a practical get-you-home solution, but inspect the tyre properly once you are back at home.

5. Spin, seal and reinflate

Rotate the wheel so the repaired area passes through the sealant at the bottom, then spin it several times. Check closely for bubbles or a continuing spray of sealant. If the leak persists, add another plug or reassess the size and location of the damage.

Once the leak has stopped, reinflate gradually. With CO2, attach the inflator securely to the Presta valve and control the flow carefully. CO2 is extremely cold as it expands, so keep fingers clear of exposed metal where possible. A mini pump is slower but offers better control, particularly when deciding whether the repair will hold.

Bring the tyre back towards your usual riding pressure, not necessarily to the absolute maximum printed on the sidewall. For an emergency test, a modest pressure is enough to confirm the seal. Check the plug again, listen for air and give the tyre a firm squeeze. If it remains stable, trim any excessively long plug tails only if you have a safe cutter available; otherwise leave them alone. They will wear down naturally.

Ride home or carry on?

A successful plug can last for the remaining ride and, in many cases, much longer. Still, treat the first few kilometres as a test. Ride smoothly, avoid hard cornering and recheck pressure after a short distance. On a road bike running higher pressures, even a small loss can become noticeable quickly. On an MTB or gravel bike, watch for tyre squirm, bead burps and sealant weeping around the repair.

The sensible decision depends on the puncture. A neat, sealed tread hole in a tyre with healthy casing is often fine to continue riding. A large cut, repeated pressure loss or a plug near the shoulder of the tyre deserves a cautious route home. No compact repair tool can restore the structural strength of damaged casing threads.

At home, inspect the repair under good light, top up sealant if required and check pressure again the next morning. If it holds, the tyre may remain in service. If it slowly loses air, consider an internal patch designed for tubeless tyres or replace the tyre, particularly on a fast road bike where dependable high-pressure performance matters.
