What You'll Need
Essential Components
- Tubeless rim tape (match your rim width)
- Tubeless valves (44mm or 60mm depending on rim depth)
- Tubeless sealant (Magic Milk Biobike, Original Formula, or Hi-Fibre Race)
- Tubeless-ready or tubeless-compatible tires
- Tubeless-ready or tubeless-compatible rims
Tools Required
- Tire levers (plastic, not metal)
- Floor pump or compressor (for bead seating)
- Scissors or sharp knife
- Isopropyl alcohol and cloth
- Valve core remover tool
- Sealant injector or bottle
Step-by-Step Tubeless Conversion
Step 1: Prepare the Rim
- Remove existing tire and tube completely
- Clean rim bed thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol
- Remove any old rim tape or adhesive residue
- Inspect rim for damage, burrs, or sharp edges
- Ensure spoke holes are clean and dry
- Let rim dry completely (5-10 minutes)
Step 2: Apply Tubeless Rim Tape
- Choose Correct Width: Tape should be 2-4mm wider than internal rim width
- Start at Valve Hole: Begin taping 15cm before valve hole
- Apply Tension: Pull tape tight and smooth as you wrap
- Center the Tape: Keep tape centered in rim channel
- Overlap Layers: Wrap 2-3 complete layers for best seal
- Finish Past Valve: End 15cm past valve hole, overlapping start
- Press Firmly: Use thumb or plastic tool to press tape into rim bed
- Trim Excess: Cut tape cleanly at end point
Step 3: Install Tubeless Valve
- Locate valve hole through tape
- Pierce tape at valve hole with sharp tool (awl or valve itself)
- Make hole just large enough for valve stem
- Insert valve stem through hole from inside rim
- Thread valve nut onto stem from outside
- Tighten valve nut firmly (hand-tight plus quarter turn)
- Ensure valve is perpendicular to rim
- Check valve base seals completely against tape
Step 4: Mount the Tire (First Bead)
- Check tire rotation direction marking
- Start tire installation opposite valve
- Work first bead onto rim by hand
- Use tire levers only if absolutely necessary
- Ensure bead sits in rim center channel
- Work around rim until first bead is fully seated
Step 5: Add Sealant
Method 1: Through Valve (Recommended)
- Remove valve core with valve core tool
- Attach sealant injector to valve stem
- Inject recommended amount of sealant (see chart below)
- Reinstall valve core and tighten
- Proceed to mount second bead
Method 2: Before Second Bead
- Leave second bead unmounted
- Pour sealant directly into tire cavity
- Distribute sealant around tire
- Quickly mount second bead
Sealant Amount Guide
| Tire Size | Sealant Amount |
|---|---|
| Road (700x23-28c) | 30-60ml |
| Road (700x30-35c) | 60-75ml |
| Gravel (700x35-45c) | 75-90ml |
| MTB (29x2.0-2.4) | 90-120ml |
| MTB Plus (27.5x2.8-3.0) | 120-150ml |
Step 6: Mount Second Bead
- Start opposite valve, work second bead onto rim
- Push tire beads into center channel as you work
- Final section near valve will be tightest
- Use tire levers carefully if needed (avoid pinching tape)
- Ensure both beads are in center channel before inflation
Step 7: Seat the Beads
- Initial Inflation: Use floor pump or compressor
- High Volume Air: May need to remove valve core for faster airflow
- Listen for Pops: Beads seating make distinctive popping sounds
- Inflate to 40 PSI: Higher pressure helps bead seating
- Check Both Sides: Ensure beads are evenly seated all around
- Bounce and Shake: Help distribute sealant
Step 8: Distribute Sealant
- Lay wheel flat and rotate to coat entire inner surface
- Stand wheel upright and rotate slowly
- Shake wheel side to side
- Repeat for 2-3 minutes to ensure full coverage
- Check for air leaks (listen for hissing)
- Sealant will seal small leaks within minutes
Step 9: Set Final Pressure and Test
- Adjust to your desired riding pressure
- Let sit for 15-30 minutes, check pressure again
- Top up if needed (some air loss is normal initially)
- Spin wheel to check for wobbles or uneven seating
- Wipe excess sealant from tire and rim
- Repeat process for second wheel
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Beads Won't Seat
- Remove valve core for maximum airflow
- Use compressor or tubeless inflator for burst of air
- Add soapy water to bead/rim interface
- Ensure tire is tubeless-ready (some tires won't seal)
- Check rim tape is smooth without wrinkles
Air Leaking from Valve
- Tighten valve nut (not too tight)
- Check valve base seal against tape
- Add small amount of sealant around valve base
- Replace valve if damaged or worn
Air Leaking from Rim Tape
- Check tape coverage is complete
- Look for wrinkles, bubbles, or gaps
- May need to re-tape with fresh tape
- Ensure tape width is correct for rim
Sealant Spraying Out
- Large puncture - may need plug repair
- Bead not fully seated - deflate and reseat
- Damaged tire sidewall - may not seal
- Add more sealant if needed
Maintenance Schedule
Every Ride
- Check tire pressure (tubeless loses air faster than tubes)
- Inspect for cuts or damage
- Top up pressure as needed
Monthly
- Check sealant level (shake wheel, listen for liquid)
- Top up sealant if needed (30-60ml)
- Inspect valve for clogs or damage
Every 3-6 Months
- Replace sealant completely
- Clean out dried sealant from tire
- Inspect rim tape condition
- Check valve seals and replace if worn
Pro Tips for Tubeless Success
- Temperature Matters: Warm tires seat easier - work in warm environment if possible
- Soapy Water: Light spray on bead helps seating and shows leaks
- Patience Pays: Some setups take time - let sealant work
- Quality Components: Use proper tubeless tape and valves for best results
- Fresh Sealant: Old sealant won't seal - replace regularly
- Practice First: Try conversion at home before trip or race
