MTB Accessories Guide - Chain Stay Guards & Frame Storage

Master MTB accessory installation with our comprehensive guide. Learn how to protect your frame with chain stay guards, organize tools with frame straps, and mount bottle cages for optimal hydration on the trail.

Chain Stay Guard Installation

Chain stay guards protect your frame from chain slap damage and reduce noise for a quieter ride. Essential for carbon and aluminum frames.

What You'll Need

  • Professional MTB Silicone Chain Stay Guard - 3D Protection System
  • Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning)
  • Clean cloth
  • Masking tape (optional, for alignment)

Why Chain Stay Guards Matter

  • Frame protection - Chain slap can damage paint, dent aluminum, or crack carbon frames over time
  • Noise reduction - Eliminates the annoying chain slap sound on rough terrain
  • Resale value - Protects the frame from cosmetic damage that reduces resale value
  • 3D design - Our silicone guard absorbs impacts better than flat guards

Installation Steps

  1. Clean the chain stay thoroughly - Use isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth to wipe the entire chain stay area where the guard will be installed. Remove all dirt, grease, oils, and old adhesive residue. Let it dry completely (3-5 minutes). The adhesive won't stick to dirty or oily surfaces.
  2. Identify the correct position - The guard should cover the area where the chain contacts the chain stay during rough riding. This is typically the lower portion of the drive-side chain stay, from the bottom bracket area extending 15-20cm toward the rear dropout.
  3. Test fit without removing adhesive - Place the guard on the chain stay without removing the adhesive backing. Check the position and alignment. The guard should:
    • Cover the area most prone to chain slap
    • Not interfere with the rear derailleur or chain movement
    • Follow the contour of the chain stay
    • Be centered on the chain stay (not too high or low)
  4. Mark the position (optional) - Use small pieces of masking tape to mark the front and rear edges of the guard. This gives you reference points when applying the guard.
  5. Peel the adhesive backing - Starting from one end, carefully peel away the adhesive backing from the guard. Don't touch the adhesive surface with your fingers—oils from your skin reduce adhesion.
  6. Apply the guard - Starting from one end (typically the bottom bracket end), carefully position the guard on the chain stay. Press it down firmly, working your way along the length of the guard. Use your thumbs to apply firm, even pressure.
  7. Smooth out air bubbles - Use your hand to press out any air bubbles, working from the center of the guard outward toward the edges. The 3D silicone design should conform to the chain stay's shape.
  8. Secure the edges - Pay special attention to the edges of the guard. Press firmly along all edges to ensure they're fully adhered. Edges are the most likely to lift over time.
  9. Apply extra pressure - Use your thumbs to apply firm pressure over the entire guard for 30-60 seconds. This activates the adhesive and ensures maximum bond strength.
  10. Let it cure - Wait 24 hours before riding to allow the adhesive to fully bond. Avoid getting the guard wet during this time.
  11. Trim if needed - If the guard extends beyond the chain stay or interferes with components, carefully trim the excess with sharp scissors or a knife.

Chain Stay Guard Pro Tips

  • Install on a clean, dry day - Humidity and moisture reduce adhesive effectiveness
  • Warm the adhesive - In cold weather, warm the guard with a hair dryer for 30 seconds before installation to improve adhesion
  • 3D silicone absorbs impacts better - Our Professional MTB Silicone Chain Stay Guard uses 3D design to absorb chain slap energy more effectively than flat guards
  • Easy to remove and replace - When it's time to replace, peel off the old guard and clean the chain stay with isopropyl alcohol before installing a new one
  • Won't damage paint - The adhesive is designed to remove cleanly without damaging paint or clear coat
  • Check regularly - Inspect the guard every few months. If edges are lifting, press them down or replace the guard

Maintenance

  • Clean the guard with water and mild soap after muddy rides
  • Check for lifting edges monthly and press them down
  • Replace the guard annually or when it shows significant wear
  • If the guard becomes loose, remove it, clean the chain stay, and install a new guard

MTB Frame Strap Installation

Frame straps provide convenient tool and tube storage without the bulk of a saddle bag. Perfect for enduro and trail riding.

What You'll Need

  • Professional MTB Enduro Frame Strap - Velcro Tool & Tube Carrier (100g)
  • Spare tube
  • Multi-tool
  • CO2 cartridges (optional)
  • Tyre levers (optional)

Why Frame Straps Are Better Than Saddle Bags

  • Lower center of gravity - Weight is positioned lower on the frame, improving bike handling
  • No saddle interference - Perfect for bikes with dropper posts where saddle bags can interfere
  • Easy access - Tools are accessible without dismounting
  • Aerodynamic - Less wind resistance than saddle bags
  • Lightweight - Our 100g frame strap is lighter than most saddle bags
  • Secure - Velcro design prevents rattling and stays put on rough terrain

Choosing the Mounting Location

Option 1: Top Tube (Most Popular)

  • Pros: Easy access, doesn't interfere with bottles or frame bags, visible for quick checks
  • Cons: Can interfere with knee clearance on small frames
  • Best for: Medium to large frames, XC and trail riding

Option 2: Down Tube

  • Pros: Out of the way, protected from impacts, doesn't affect handling
  • Cons: Harder to access, can interfere with bottle cages
  • Best for: Bikes with limited top tube space, enduro riding

Option 3: Seat Tube

  • Pros: Doesn't interfere with knees or bottles, protected position
  • Cons: Hardest to access, limited space on small frames
  • Best for: Bikes with dropper posts, bikepacking setups

Installation Steps

  1. Choose your mounting location - Select top tube, down tube, or seat tube based on your bike's geometry and your preferences. Ensure the strap won't interfere with:
    • Knee clearance while pedaling
    • Cable routing
    • Bottle cages
    • Frame bags
  2. Clean the frame tube - Wipe the mounting area with a clean cloth to remove dirt and moisture. The Velcro will grip better on a clean surface.
  3. Load your tools - Before mounting, load the strap with your essentials:
    • Spare tube (folded or rolled tightly)
    • Multi-tool
    • 2-3 CO2 cartridges
    • Tyre levers (if they fit)
    • Patch kit (optional)
Arrange items so the strap closes securely without bulging excessively.
  4. Wrap the strap around the frame tube - Position the strap around the tube with the Velcro closure facing outward (away from the frame). Ensure the strap is centered and level.
  5. Secure the Velcro - Pull the strap tight and press the Velcro together firmly. The strap should be snug but not so tight that it compresses the frame (especially important for carbon frames).
  6. Adjust position - Slide the strap along the tube to find the optimal position. It should be:
    • Accessible while standing over the bike
    • Clear of knees, cables, and other components
    • Secure and not prone to sliding
  7. Test security - Shake the bike vigorously. The strap and contents should not rattle or move. If they do, tighten the Velcro or reposition the strap.
  8. Test access - Practice removing and replacing the strap while standing over the bike. You should be able to access your tools quickly in a roadside repair scenario.

Frame Strap Pro Tips

  • Pack strategically - Put frequently used items (multi-tool) on the outside for easy access. Put the spare tube in the center for protection.
  • Use a plastic bag for the tube - Wrap your spare tube in a small plastic bag to keep it clean and dry
  • Check tightness regularly - Velcro can loosen over time, especially on rough trails. Check and re-tighten monthly.
  • Our 100g frame strap - Lightweight, durable Velcro design, perfect for enduro and trail riding
  • Combine with bottle cages - Frame straps work well alongside bottle cages—mount the strap on the top tube and bottles on the down tube and seat tube
  • Easy removal for washing - Remove the strap before washing your bike to clean both the strap and frame thoroughly

What to Carry in Your Frame Strap

Essential items (always carry):

  • Spare tube (appropriate size for your tyres)
  • Multi-tool with chain tool
  • 2-3 CO2 cartridges (16g or 25g depending on tyre size)
  • CO2 inflator head

Optional items (if space allows):

  • Tyre levers
  • Tubeless plug kit
  • Quick link for chain
  • Small patch kit
  • Valve core tool

Bottle Cage Installation

Proper bottle cage installation ensures secure hydration on rough trails without bottle ejection.

What You'll Need

  • Signature Matt Black Bottle Cage - Ultra-Light 75g with Mounting Bolts
  • 4mm hex key or torque wrench
  • Water bottle (for test fitting)

Installation Steps

  1. Locate bottle cage bosses - Most MTB frames have threaded holes (bosses) on the down tube and seat tube. Some frames also have bosses on the top tube or under the down tube.
  2. Choose the best position - For MTB, consider:
    • Down tube: Most accessible while riding, but exposed to mud and debris
    • Seat tube: More protected, but harder to access on small frames
    • Under down tube: Protected from mud, but hardest to access
  3. Clean the mounting area - Wipe the frame around the bosses to remove dirt and ensure the cage sits flush.
  4. Position the cage - Hold the Signature Matt Black Bottle Cage against the frame to determine the best orientation:
    • Opening facing forward (easier to insert bottle while riding)
    • Opening facing backward (more secure on rough terrain)
For MTB, opening backward is often preferred for better bottle retention.
  5. Insert the mounting bolts - Thread the included stainless steel mounting bolts through the cage and into the frame bosses. Start both bolts by hand to ensure they're not cross-threaded.
  6. Tighten to proper torque - Use a 4mm hex key or torque wrench set to 3-4Nm. Don't over-tighten—you can crack carbon frames or strip aluminum threads.
  7. Test fit a bottle - Insert a water bottle and ensure it:
    • Slides in and out smoothly
    • Is held securely (shouldn't fall out when the bike is inverted)
    • Doesn't interfere with your knees while pedaling
  8. Adjust if needed - If the bottle is too loose or too tight, some cages have adjustable arms. Our Signature Matt Black Bottle Cage is designed for optimal grip without adjustment.

Bottle Cage Pro Tips

  • Opening backward for MTB - Mounting the cage with the opening facing backward provides better bottle retention on rough trails
  • Use side-loading cages for small frames - If your frame has limited space between the bottle and frame, use a side-loading cage design
  • Our Signature Matt Black Bottle Cage - Ultra-light at 75g, includes stainless steel mounting bolts, and provides excellent bottle retention
  • Clean regularly - Mud and dirt can build up in the cage, scratching bottles and reducing grip. Rinse after muddy rides.
  • Check bolt tightness monthly - Vibration can loosen bolts over time. Re-tighten to 3-4Nm if needed.
  • Consider multiple cages - Long rides require more water. Install cages on both down tube and seat tube, or use a frame bag with hydration bladder.
