Is Your Bike Ready for Spring?

Winter takes its toll on bikes and components. Before the roads dry out and the trails open up, give your bike the attention it deserves. Whether you're preparing for National Bike to Work Day on May 15th or gearing up for spring sportives and weekend rides, this checklist will help you get road-ready.

10-Point Spring Bike Check

  1. Chain Condition – Inspect for rust, stiffness, or excessive wear. Winter grit accelerates chain degradation.
  2. Brake Performance – Check pad wear and cable tension. Spring roads can be debris-filled; reliable braking is essential.
  3. Tyre Pressure & Condition – Inspect for cuts, cracks, or embedded debris. Inflate to recommended pressure.
  4. Gear Shifting – Test all gears under load. Winter moisture can cause cable corrosion and indexing issues.
  5. Wheel Trueness – Spin wheels and check for wobbles or spoke tension issues.
  6. Headset & Bottom Bracket – Check for play or grinding. Water ingress over winter can damage bearings.
  7. Tubeless Sealant – If running tubeless, refresh sealant that may have dried out over winter months.
  8. Bolt Torque Check – Verify critical bolts (stem, seatpost, chainring, brake calipers) are properly torqued.
  9. Frame & Fork Inspection – Look for cracks, paint chips, or corrosion, especially around welds and cable routing.
  10. Lighting & Visibility – For commuters: ensure lights are charged and reflective elements are clean.
