Why Proper Bike Cleaning Matters

  • Extends component life - Dirt and grime accelerate wear on bearings, seals, and moving parts
  • Improves performance - A clean bike shifts better, brakes more effectively, and runs quieter
  • Prevents corrosion - Regular cleaning removes salt, mud, and moisture that cause rust
  • Maintains resale value - Well-maintained bikes command higher prices
  • Early problem detection - Cleaning reveals cracks, wear, and damage before they become serious
  • Pride of ownership - A clean bike is more enjoyable to ride

Complete Bike Wash Guide

What You'll Need

  • Dirty Weekend Professional Pre-Wash (1000ml) - for heavy soiling
  • Professional Rapid Wash System (1kg concentrate)
  • Professional Matt Frame Cleaner (500ml) - for matte finishes
  • Bucket
  • Soft sponge or wash mitt
  • Soft-bristled brushes (various sizes)
  • Hose with gentle spray nozzle
  • Professional Microfiber Drying Towel (500g ultra-absorbent)
  • Professional Microfiber Detailing Cloth (100g ultra-soft)

Step-by-Step Wash Process

  1. Pre-rinse - Rinse the entire bike with water to remove loose dirt and debris. Use low pressure—high-pressure washers can force water into bearings, bottom brackets, and headsets, causing damage. Focus on the drivetrain, wheels, and frame.
  2. Apply pre-wash to heavily soiled areas - Spray Dirty Weekend Professional Pre-Wash (1000ml biodegradable formula) on the dirtiest areas:
    • Drivetrain (chain, cassette, chainrings, derailleurs)
    • Wheels and tyres
    • Fork stanchions and rear shock
    • Bottom bracket area
    • Any mud-caked sections
Let it dwell for 3-5 minutes to break down grime. Don't let it dry on the bike.
  3. Agitate with brushes - Use soft-bristled brushes to gently scrub the pre-washed areas:
    • Drivetrain brush for chain and cassette
    • Wheel brush for spokes and rims
    • Soft detailing brush for frame tubes and components
Work the pre-wash into all the crevices where dirt hides.
  4. Rinse thoroughly - Rinse off all the pre-wash solution with clean water. Ensure no residue remains, especially on brake rotors and pads.
  5. Prepare main wash solution - Mix Professional Rapid Wash System (1kg concentrate) with water in a bucket according to the instructions on the bottle. The concentrate is highly effective—a little goes a long way. One bucket is enough for a full bike wash.
  6. Wash the frame from top to bottom - Dip a soft sponge or wash mitt into the wash solution. Start at the top of the bike (saddle, top tube) and work your way down. This prevents dirty water from dripping onto already-cleaned areas. Wash in sections:
    • Saddle and seat post
    • Top tube and down tube
    • Head tube and fork
    • Chainstays and seat stays
    • Bottom bracket area
Rinse the sponge frequently in the bucket to avoid scratching the frame with trapped dirt.
  7. For matte finishes, use Professional Matt Frame Cleaner - If your bike has a matte-painted frame, switch to Professional Matt Frame Cleaner (500ml streak-free formula) instead of the regular wash. Matte finishes require special care:
    • Spray the cleaner directly onto the matte surface
    • Wipe gently with a soft microfiber cloth
    • Don't use circular motions—wipe in straight lines
    • The formula is designed to clean without leaving shine or streaks
  8. Clean the wheels - Use the wash solution and a dedicated wheel brush to clean:
    • Rims (inside and outside)
    • Spokes
    • Hubs
    • Tyres (use a stiffer brush for tyres)
Pay special attention to brake surfaces—any residue can affect braking performance.
  9. Clean brake rotors and pads - Use clean water only (no soap) on disc brake rotors and pads. Soap residue reduces braking power. Wipe rotors with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
  10. Final rinse - Rinse the entire bike with clean water, ensuring all soap and cleaner residue is removed. Check hidden areas like under the bottom bracket and inside the rear triangle.
  11. Dry the bike - Use the Professional Microfiber Drying Towel (500g ultra-absorbent) to dry the frame, wheels, and components. This prevents water spots and corrosion. Pat dry rather than rubbing to avoid scratching. Pay special attention to:
    • Headset and bottom bracket areas (water can seep into bearings)
    • Brake calipers and rotors
    • Derailleur pivots
    • Seat post (remove and dry the inside of the seat tube if wet)
  12. Detail and polish - Use the Professional Microfiber Detailing Cloth (100g ultra-soft) to buff the frame to a showroom finish. Wipe in straight lines for matte finishes, circular motions for gloss finishes. This removes any remaining water spots and brings out the paint's depth.
  13. Lubricate the drivetrain - After washing, the chain and drivetrain are clean but dry. Apply fresh chain lubricant to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. See our Chain Maintenance Guide for detailed lubrication instructions.
  14. Inspect for damage - While the bike is clean, inspect for:
    • Frame cracks or dents
    • Worn brake pads
    • Tyre cuts or excessive wear
    • Loose bolts or components
    • Cable fraying

Bike Washing Pro Tips

  • Wash frequency - After every muddy or wet ride, or every 2-4 weeks for regular riding
  • Avoid high-pressure washers - They force water into bearings and can damage seals. Use a gentle hose spray instead.
  • Don't spray directly at bearings - Avoid aiming water at headsets, bottom brackets, wheel hubs, or suspension pivots
  • Remove wheels for thorough cleaning - This gives access to hard-to-reach areas like the rear triangle and brake calipers
  • Clean in the shade - Direct sunlight causes cleaners to dry too quickly, leaving streaks
  • Our Professional Rapid Wash System (1kg) - Biodegradable, pH-neutral, safe for all bike finishes including carbon, and lasts 15-20 full bike washes
  • Dirty Weekend Pre-Wash (1000ml) - Specifically formulated for heavy mud and grime, biodegradable, and safe for all surfaces

Frame Protection & Waxing

Protect your frame from the elements and make future cleaning easier with our Professional Carnauba Sealant Wax.

What You'll Need

  • Professional Carnauba Sealant Wax (30g)
  • Professional Microfiber Detailing Cloth (100g ultra-soft)
  • Clean, dry frame

Application Steps

  1. Ensure the frame is completely clean and dry - Wax won't bond to dirty or wet surfaces. The bike should be freshly washed and dried.
  2. Work in small sections - Apply wax to one section at a time (approximately 30cm x 30cm). This prevents the wax from drying too much before buffing.
  3. Apply a thin layer of wax - Use a clean microfiber cloth to apply a thin, even layer of Professional Carnauba Sealant Wax to the frame. Use circular motions for gloss finishes, straight lines for matte finishes. Less is more—a thin layer works better than a thick one.
  4. Let it haze - Wait 2-3 minutes for the wax to haze (turn cloudy). The exact time depends on temperature and humidity. Touch it lightly—it should feel dry but not hard.
  5. Buff to shine - Use a clean section of the Professional Microfiber Detailing Cloth to buff the wax to a deep, glossy shine. Use firm, circular motions. The wax should buff off easily, leaving a smooth, protected surface.
  6. Continue section by section - Repeat the process for the entire frame, working from top to bottom.
  7. Final buff - Once the entire frame is waxed, do a final pass over the whole bike with a clean cloth to ensure a uniform finish.
  8. Avoid waxing certain areas - Don't apply wax to:
    • Brake rotors or pads (reduces braking power)
    • Tyre treads (reduces grip)
    • Saddle (makes it slippery)
    • Handlebar tape or grips (makes them slippery)

Benefits of Frame Waxing

  • UV protection - Prevents paint fading and oxidation from sun exposure
  • Moisture barrier - Repels water, reducing corrosion risk
  • Easier cleaning - Dirt and grime don't stick as easily to a waxed surface
  • Enhanced appearance - Deepens paint color and adds gloss
  • Long-lasting protection - Lasts 3-6 months depending on riding conditions and weather

Waxing Schedule

  • New bikes: Wax immediately after purchase for maximum protection
  • Regular maintenance: Wax 2-3 times per year (spring, mid-summer, autumn)
  • After long storage: Wax before storing for winter and after bringing out in spring
  • Before events: Wax before races or gran fondos for that showroom look

Waxing Pro Tips

  • Don't wax in direct sunlight - The wax will dry too quickly and be difficult to buff
  • Don't wax hot surfaces - Let the bike cool down if it's been in the sun or after a ride
  • Use separate cloths for application and buffing - This prevents reapplying wax while trying to buff
  • Our 30g Professional Carnauba Sealant Wax - Premium carnauba formula, enough for 3-4 full bike applications, safe for all paint types including matte (test in inconspicuous area first)
  • Matte finishes - Test wax on a small, hidden area first. Some matte finishes can develop shine with wax. If this occurs, use only Professional Matt Frame Cleaner instead.

Matte Finish Care

Matte-painted frames require special care to maintain their unique non-reflective finish.

Do's for Matte Finishes

  • Use Professional Matt Frame Cleaner (500ml) - Specifically formulated for matte finishes, streak-free, won't add shine
  • Wipe in straight lines - Avoid circular motions that can create shine spots
  • Use soft microfiber cloths - Our Professional Microfiber Detailing Cloth (100g) is perfect for matte finishes
  • Dry immediately after washing - Water spots are more visible on matte finishes
  • Clean regularly - Matte finishes show dirt more easily than gloss

Don'ts for Matte Finishes

  • Don't use regular car wax - It will create shiny spots and ruin the matte appearance
  • Don't use abrasive cleaners - They can damage the matte surface permanently
  • Don't use polish - Polish is designed to create shine, the opposite of what you want
  • Don't rub aggressively - Gentle wiping is sufficient and prevents shine development
  • Don't use silicone-based products - They leave a glossy residue

Restoring Matte Finish

If your matte finish has developed shiny spots from improper cleaning:

  1. Clean the area with Professional Matt Frame Cleaner
  2. Gently rub the shiny area with a very fine Scotch-Brite pad (grey or white, not green)
  3. Wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth
  4. Dry thoroughly
  5. The matte finish should be restored
